Maritimes

We took a driving trip out to the Maritimes in August. Unfortunately it rained most of the time. However, an early highlight of the trip was stopping at the Colonial Inn in Concord Massachusetts where we had a wonderful meal.  It was established in 1716, and still retains its old world charm, and the food is awesome. Afterwards we drove by Henry David Thoreau’s Walden Pond, but didn't stop due to the rain, a real disappointment. We finally arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Friday August 8th.

On Sunday, we headed out to Peggy's Cove but it was a cloudy gloomy day which really didn’t lend itself to great landscape photography. Later we drove up to Sydney. The weather had it cleared up in the afternoon and I was able to get a few nice shots in and around the Salmon River Bridge area. We found a great little place called the Salmon River Inn and stopped for a late lunch at their Lobster Shack Restaurant.

Monday morning we boarded a ferry to take us to Port aux Basques Newfoundland. On our way to Corner Brook we passed by some great scenic landscapes but once again it was pouring rain. We drove across to Gander and then on to St. John's. We did have a few nice days while in St. John's. We then drove back to Corner Brook once again in the rain. The next day the weather was just beautiful and we drove out to Lark Harbour in the morning. I was able to get many differing shots as the long and winding road to Lark Harbour was a surprise at every turn giving different and beautiful vistas to enjoy. Later that afternoon we again boarded the ferry to take us back to Sydney.

The next leg of our trip was along the Cabot Trail and it was absolutely beautiful. The weather was great and the scenery was awesome. Every town provided exposure to the varied & different cultures that make up Cape Breton. We stopped at a little country Restaurant & Inn in Ingonish, called the Crofter’s Table where the food was amazing. My wife swears she had the best bowl of Potato Leak soup ever! The entire Cabot Trail was like a breath of fresh air along with magnificent vistas waiting at every turn. It's a must see if you are ever out that way!

Our next stop was Charlottetown in Prince Edward Island. Once again it was pouring rain during our stay there, but we could see in our limited travels how beautiful it was. We did manage to visit the Anne of Green Cables home, a favourite of my wife’s.

We then began our way back home and wouldn't you know it, the weather cleared up and was beautiful the rest of our trip back home. I was able to enjoy and photograph a gorgeous sunset in Riviere Du Loup, Quebec where we stopped for the night.

The Maritimes are a beautiful place to travel but you have to check the weather to make sure that you are not travelling during the rainy season.

Photo Pics Etc.

I am planning a trip to Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island this August with the hopes of capturing some great new scenic landscapes. Any thoughts on must see places?
